 | | Pictures Awakening the robot: future beauty in Dew. Awakening seems a fitting title for Jacky Suharto’s shoot for Dew Magazine’s Sci-Fi issue. It’s a common theme of the genre: robots being awakened with the spark of consciousness, becoming self-aware or taking on human characteristics. Though the question is framed with technology it circles perpetually back to ourselves, leaving us to wonder what being human really means. Photo gallery included. Amoungst Oscar Wilde’s beautiful, prose-filled, bittersweet stories for grown-up children is a tale called The Fisherman and His Soul. I was always struck by the sadness of it: the titular Fisherman falling in love with a mermaid and cutting away his human soul in order to be with her (“Of what use is my soul to me?” he reasons. “I cannot see it. I may not touch it. I do not know it. Surely I will send it away from me, and much gladness shall be mine.”) And then, the pernicious separation of physical heart and metaphysical soul – the latter taking on a life of its own, becoming corrupted in the absence of the former – causing his unwitting downfall. Sometimes creating a breathtaking underwater shoot comes down to brilliant makeup that shines through the weight of the water, sometimes the wow factor is aided by reflections and ripples and waves. The only thing that you might say is mandatory is a wardrobe of flowing gowns and diaphanous fabrics that shape-shift into ethereal forms when they enter the aqueous depths. After all: why opt for body-conscious cuts when you have the opportunity to create images like these? Photo gallery included. Latest Collections. Recent Features. Hair How to create a chic yet dishevelled knotted low ponytail. For her latest spring collection, Alice McCall took us on an underwater journey. Drawing inspiration from German botanist illustrator Ernst Haekel and the intricate detail of Art Nouveau jewellery, the collection featured beautiful cut-out lace pieces, Japanese organza and custom-prints. The hairstyle took inspiration from the collection itself: a knotted low ponytail that channels how a girl might look after she has gone swimming in the ocean. Hair Grace Kelly meets Geisha: hairstyle how-to. Grace Kelly met âGeishaâ on the runway at the Maticevski spring / summer 2013 show at Australian fashion week. With a collection inspired by a refreshed view of a 1950âs Grace Kelly, as seen through the eyes of an Aristocratic European Geisha, Toni Maticevski created beautiful, desirable garments for women to adore and be adored in. Jayne Wild from ghd took inspiration for this elegant hairstyle in the idea of “Grace Kelly goes to Japan”. You can recreate this “Grace Kelly goes to Japan” inspired hairstyle. Hair How to create a relaxed, retro-inspired quiff for men. Retro looks with modern twists are all over the different runway shows in the different parts of the globe. For Australian fashion week, several remakes of classic or vintage hairstyles were spotted, one of which was seen in the Vanishing Elephant show. Redken Hair Director Jon Pulitano created a men's hairstyle that’s reminiscent of the vintage 1950s quiff only done with a modern twist. The contemporary feel comes in by way of the effortless factor: rather than be too sculptured and perfect, this version is a little bit haphazard. This quiff is very easy to do and we have the how to right after the break. Beauty & Grooming How to: the nautical beauty look at Dion Lee. Blue eye makeup is a huge trend for this year. Napoleon Perdis took advantage of this beauty trend and incorporated it in the Dion Lee show at Australian Fashion Week (MBFWA), creating a modern nautical look with a hint of darkness and edge. It’s a good mix of different elements but still very much reflects the brand’s essence. We have the complete how-to for this look and you’ll find it if you read on after the break.
